CHAPTER 10

We no sooner got home and Brett rushed Maddie into the car. I managed to give him the map with possible prints. Kim drove off right after Brett and Maddie. It was still light out so I took Charlie for a run. I tried to clear my head, but kept coming back to Trevor’s comments about the money side of things. From the interaction, neither Cabot nor Crystal were enamored of Wyatt, so why was he there? Neither was Maisy. Where did he come from? The run was good, yet even when we were back home and I’d showered my mind still raced.

I got out a sheet of paper and diagrammed all the people at Hidden Oaks and in Round Rock I had come in contact with, heard about, or read about, and how they were connected before and after Meissner’s demise. What stood out in my before and after picture was the role of Rachel Meissner before the murder, supplanted now by Wyatt.

To fill in my diagram and pass the time before Brett returned, I got the bag with all the Weekly issues Maisy provided and sorted them. A quick glance told me they followed a format that focused mostly on the celebrations – sometimes of life and sometimes of death – of community members. The stories highlighted the interconnections with the Cabot family. The funeral was the big story of the current issue. I added information to my diagram.

I was about to check to see if the weekly was back online, when I heard Brett’s car drive up. A quick kiss and he shook his head. “Do we have any wine?”

I nodded. Two glasses poured, we sat on the couch. Stress lines marked his face and his teeth clenched.

“What happened?” I massaged his neck as he let out a sigh and shook his head.

“Victoria. I never realized how selfish and shallow she is. She started yelling at Maddie as soon as we walked in the door. We were there in plenty of time for dinner and Maddie didn’t have any more idea what the problem was than I did. Once Maddie ran to her room to ‘get cleaned up,’ Victoria gave me an ultimatum.” His head fell forward and his voice dropped.

“What? What did she say?”

“She and Roger are now leaving in May, not June or July. I can either figure out how to take custody before they leave or Maddie will go with them.”

“That makes no sense. Why can’t they let her finish the school year? They don’t really want her to go with them, do they?”

“No, it doesn’t make sense. No, they don’t really want her to go with them. Roger calls her a brat and teases her incessantly.”

“Brett, we can figure this out. Is there someone Maddie could stay with in Richmond until school gets out? Could you hire someone to stay with her at the house? How many weeks are we talking here?”

“More weeks than I have vacation or personal time to go live in Richmond.
